What’s your story?

In 1980 I was in a diving accident at Lake Erie and was hospitalized at MCO Hospital in Toledo with a fusion on my neck. Three months later I was taken to Lakeland Rehabilitation Center in Lorin, Ohio for six months. I returned to 10th grade to finish high school, then continued on to Kent State University where I received my bachelors degree in Individual and Family Consumer Studies. With my degree, I obtained a job in social services working with mentally ill populations in state correctional facilities. Shortly after I started working, I got married and had my son Dylan, who is the light of my life.

Why did you choose Model M power wheelchair?

I visited The Chair Doctor in Canton, OH for a repair on my prior power wheelchair and saw the WHILL Model M. I thought it was so unique, modern and innovative, and I had to drive it. The Model M was very comfortable, agile, and extremely easy to drive.

What do you like about Model M power wheelchair?

I really like the design of Model M, and it’s always well-received when I’m out. People shout, “Nice ride!” The power, speed, and stability allow me to quickly and safely travel over rough terrain and in snowy conditions. The smooth edges help to prevent accidental dings to the walls and woodwork in my house. The tail lights make me much more visible at night when I walk my dog or when driving through a parking lot. But my overall favorite feature is the seat slide because it puts me more in the conversation and allows me to reach things better without straining to lean forward.

How has the Model M power wheelchair impacted your life?

After almost 37 years of being in a chair, I thought I had experienced everything—or so I thought. Model M makes me more approachable and people are interested in talking to me to learn about this power wheelchair. Most importantly, Model M allows me to go more places without being worried about getting stuck, and since the ride is much better, I’m no longer on the sideline!
