What’s your story?
I went from running a Marathon and completing an Olympic Distance Triathlon in 2006-07, to being permanently paralyzed from cancer by early 2008. I’ve never met anyone else that has been paralyzed this way, but nonetheless, I maintain a positive attitude. I give all Glory to God, as I have survived cancer several times and I am alive to share my testimony!
Since 2008, I have become extremely independent, living by myself in a wheelchair-accessible home with my trusty dog, Dixie Girl. I have a long life to live and am focused on my mind, business, public speaking, consulting, fundraising, networking, and more to Always Finish Strong in whatever I take on.
Why did you choose Model M power wheelchair?
Being a very active manual wheelchair user, I wanted to see how the WHILL Model M would fit into my routine. Preserving my upper body health is a priority, and I saw how Model M could save the wear and tear on my shoulders while helping me get from point A to B in a quicker, more stylish way. I also thought about how many fellow “wheelchair riders” in the Tampa Bay area that this would appeal to and how I could introduce them to this device.
What do you like about Model M power wheelchair?
What’s not to like—the futuristic look, speed, and transferability are amazing. It’s super easy to take it up and down the ramp into my van, the turning radius is sharp, and the ability to get under tables better with the seat slide has been a life-changer! Furthermore, I’ve never run out of battery life—WHILL Model M easily handles a full day of activity.
How has the Model M power wheelchair impacted your life?
Model M has everything I need to allow me to enjoy a better quality of life and live a more productive lifestyle. I exercise a lot, but like to be in control of how much I do—I don’t always need the additional wear on my body that comes from using a manual wheelchair.
Model M makes getting around easier so I can get more done in a day. Additionally, it allows me to keep up with or lead the group when out with friends, plus I can go off concrete paths and across more diverse terrains—unlike any manual chair I have been in. Lastly, it makes me happy to get more looks of awe from bystanders rather than odd looks.
Note: Jeff had an extensive test drive with a demo unit.
