What’s your story?

I was paralyzed in an automobile accident on September 12, 1999. One of the very first things I asked the doctors was whether or not I could still have children. When they told me yes, I knew that nothing else mattered. My dreams for a family would still come true. I would just go about it a little bit differently than I first imagined. Immediately following my injury, to help cope with this drastic change in my life, I began sharing my journey as a woman, a wife and later a mom on wheels across various forums. I quickly discovered that not only I was benefiting from this, but that others found my stories encouraging and helpful, as well. So, in early 2000, I started my blog, The Wheelchair Mommy, then expanded into social media in 2011.

Why did you choose Model M power wheelchair?

I chose the Model M because it gives me some “off-road” capabilities. I’m the mom of 3 boys and my manual wheelchair can’t always go where I want it to go, at least not independently. The Model M power wheelchair gives me that flexibility. I don’t always need it, but when I do, I am grateful to have it.

What do you like about Model M power wheelchair?

The turning radius is fabulous and I love the speed. I don’t usually go very fast in my manual chair, but the Model M power wheelchair almost gives me the sensation of being able to run. Who doesn’t love the wind in their hair?! I love seeing my kids giggle as I FLY past them.

How has the Model M power wheelchair impacted your life?

Normally, when my husband and I go to the beach, he carries me and plops me down, and I’m at his mercy; and when we are able to rent a beach chair, he’s behind me pushing because they don’t make those with independant users in mind. Now, with the Model M power wheelchair, my husband and I were able to take a “walk” on the beach, side-by-side. He proposed to me on the beach and have been married for almost 15 years– we have NEVER been able to do this. The beach is very special to us, so it was incredible.
